Gary shared his shoes with me for this blog post. I was honored to use them. Gary and his brother, Rob, changed their lives as they moved their legs to a different beat. Both of them were faced with life changing problems and decided to fight their troubles with faith and movement. They are inspirations and are not alone. Sarah Robles, Aliy Zirkle, and so many more exist in our world. People to admire and cheer for and wish you could be like. Yet, it is when you finally look those amazing people in the eye and think, I can do this, too, that those inspirations live inside you.
I've read a great many books on walking and running. I've even (sporadically) actually spent a week or two in movement. I've daydreamed about being able to not hobble around on my gimpy leg and I've always fallen short. It is hard to start moving when I would rather not. There are so many things to distract me. Books, cats (Moses has a tendency to follow us if we leave the house and he just happens to see us), chores, and projects. There is so much time in my day and I waste so much of it.
I think a moving buddy would be helpful. But, I'm ashamed to admit how bad I am at it to a real person! Here, it is easy. No one knows me and my words go in one blog and out the other. But, I am going to start moving. And the very best way is to, "Just DO it." If George Attla could run an Iditarod with a bad leg and a team of dogs, I can certainly learn to run a mile or two on my own!
