This is an old scene from when we lived on the Oregon Coast. Moses was younger, not a kitten, but not many years of age. He is orange and white and has 6 toes on each foot. This makes catching birds very easy for him. He used to often capture hummingbirds in his giant softball mitt paws and I’d have to rescue the disgruntled air jewels.
We had a neighbor, elderly and more than eccentric. She lived in a tiny camper trailer behind the abandoned grocery store and kept chickens. During the day, she let them run around outside her trailer. Moses enjoyed these chickens. I don’t recall if there was a rooster, but they were noisy and great at fluttering around. The neighbor lived just a stone’s throw from our own double wide mobile home and Moses was used to wandering all over the place. Before this lady moved in, he’d wander to the area and mouse in the old carport next to the store. After she moved in with the chickens, he would often be found hiding in the tall grass watching. Sometimes he’d give chase. The lady loved to watch him play tag with her chickens. She would laugh and laugh at Moses and her chickens playing together. It made me nervous. Moses is a bit of a bully and I didn’t know what I’d do if he actually ‘caught’ one of her babies!
