Gilbert was always that boy next door hero. I am not a very big fan of books to movies, but Jonathan played Gilbert exactly as I imagined him. Which is pretty dang impressive! I am saddened by his loss in our world. And I am thankful for his existence. I will never forget his cameo in an Avonlea episode after he and Anne had moved off camera to somewhere else on the island. Colleen Dewhurst, who played Marilla Cuthbert, had died and Jonathan came back for Marilla's tv funeral. I always gave him huge kudos for going back to his 'roots' and helping to finalize such a lovely woman's tv life.
I guess my thoughts on Jonathan/Gil can be encapsulated from a comment Anne wrote in a letter to Gilbert before they were wed.
"Gilbert, I'm afraid I'm scandalously in love with you.”
― L.M. Montgomery, Windy Poplars.
Jonathan, thank you for giving Gilbert to the world, I'm sorry you are gone. And I'm glad I live someplace that reminds me of one of my favorite Avonlea books. At least, when the wind blows the poplars around!
