They come in so many different colors, I was astounded! I thought they were pretty much black or black and blue (the smaller sewing needle kind). Yet, this summer I've seen brown and black, BIG blue and black, and yellows with the blacks. Their wings are veined with black and hold iridescent panes like a stained glass window. I found part of a tattered wing one day and couldn't believe how strong it was. Yet, when I let it go in the breeze, it floated along lightly.
I've been trying all summer to capture a dragonfly in flight. It is not easy, I think I need a faster camera. However, I have managed to find a few in a more natural habitat than the road and this couple above didn't seem to mind my voyeuristic photography. When I went onto Wikipedia I was rather startled at the violence within this heart shape they make to mate. I wanted to plant the text inside this blog, but alas...I made a mess of it. So, we'll use the link instead. Which will encourage you to learn even MORE about these super cool creatures!
It is funny, I don't mind a bird sitting on my finger or hand. Yet, one of these came close to landing on my knee today and I almost swamped the kayak!!! They fascinate me, but I really am not a bug kind of person!
